When reporting a bug, please include your iOS version, device model (e.g. iPhone 15 Pro), and a short description of what you were doing when it happened. Screenshots or screen recordings help a lot.

Getting Started

  1. Sign in with your Apple or Google account and set a display name.
  2. Create a household and share its invite code with your partner — or join theirs by entering the code they send you.
  3. Record expenses as they happen: tap the + button and either scan a receipt — the date, amount, category, and store name are filled in for you — or enter the date, category, amount, and who paid by hand. Add a note, mark it as one partner's personal expense, or leave it out of the settlement if needed.
  4. In settings, adjust each category's default burden ratio (it starts at 50 : 50) and register fixed costs like rent or subscriptions, with the day of the month they are paid, so they are added automatically.
  5. At the end of the month, open the settlement screen. The app calculates who pays whom and how much — deducting any prepaid balance — so you can settle up and mark the month as done.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I share the app with my partner?
One of you creates a household in the app and issues an invite code (8 characters, valid for 72 hours, reissuable). The other signs in and enters the code to join. A household holds up to two members, and you can start recording expenses on your own before your partner joins.
What is a burden ratio?
It is how a shared expense is split between the two of you. Each category carries a default ratio — 50 : 50 to begin with, and you can change it to, say, groceries 70 : 30. That default is filled in when you record an expense, and the ratio is then stored on the expense itself, so you can adjust a single expense without touching the category. When you change a category's ratio, the app asks whether to apply it to the expenses of months that have not been settled yet; settled months are never touched.
What is the personal-expense flag?
Sometimes one of you pays for something that is really the other person's personal spending — not a shared cost. Mark such an expense with the personal-expense flag, and the full amount is assigned to that person in the monthly settlement instead of being split.
Can I record something without including it in the settlement?
Yes — turn on Exclude from settlement when you enter the expense (say, a dinner the loser of a coin toss pays for). It still counts toward the month's total and category breakdown, and it carries a badge in the list, but it is left out of the settlement calculation entirely. It cannot be combined with the personal-expense flag, since the two describe different situations.
How does receipt scanning work, and where does the photo go?
Tap the + button on the home screen and choose Scan a receipt, then take a photo or pick one from your library. The app reads the text on your device using iOS's built-in text recognition and opens the entry form with the date, amount, category, and store name filled in — check it and save, or fix anything it got wrong. The receipt image and the recognised text never leave your phone: only the store name and a rough category hint are sent to our backend to suggest a category, and the app does not keep the image. If you change the suggested category before saving, the app remembers your choice for that store and uses it next time. A clear, well-lit, straight-on photo reads best; anything that cannot be read is simply left blank for you to fill in. Recognition is currently tuned for Japanese and English receipts.
Can I record several expenses in a row?
Yes. When you add a new expense, turn on Keep entering in the entry sheet: saving no longer closes it, and only the amount and the note are cleared, so the date, payer, category, subcategory, ratio, and flags carry over as the starting point for the next record. A short "Saved" message appears each time. The switch is remembered on your device, and it is not shown when you edit an existing expense.
Can I narrow down the expense list?
Yes. Tap the filter button at the right of the month header and combine category, subcategory, whether an expense counts toward the settlement, and a minimum amount. The list then shows the matching entries along with their count and total. The month's summary and the settlement figures deliberately stay based on the whole month, so they never disagree with the amount you actually settle. The filter is kept as you move between months and is cleared when you restart the app.
What is the Insights tab?
The Insights tab charts your household's spending. It is made of boards you choose yourself: the monthly spending trend, a category breakdown against last month or the same month last year, the trend of a single category, how the two of you have split costs over time, a category's share of spending over time, this month's pace compared with previous months, and a yearly summary. A new household starts with four boards; tap the + button to add more from the gallery (the same kind can be added more than once with different settings), use the ⋯ menu on a board to change its settings or remove it, and drag the handle to reorder. Boards belong to the household, so your partner sees the same set. Tap a bar in a chart to see the breakdown behind it, and use the month switcher at the top to move the whole tab to another month.
How is the monthly settlement calculated?
For each expense, the app applies that expense's own burden ratio to work out what each person should bear, compares the totals with what each person actually paid, adds personal expenses on top, and skips anything excluded from the settlement. The result is a single amount and direction: who pays whom, and how much. If there is a prepaid balance in that direction, it is deducted to give the amount to actually transfer. You can then mark the month as settled.
What is the prepaid balance?
If one of you transfers a lump sum to the other in advance, record it as a prepayment on the settlement screen. Whenever a month's settlement runs in that direction, the balance is drawn down by default and you only transfer the difference — you can turn the deduction off for a given month. The balance never goes below zero, and if a settled month is reopened, the deducted amount goes back onto the balance.
I edited an expense in a month that was already settled. What happens?
Adding, editing, or deleting an expense in a settled month — including changing its ratio or its excluded flag — automatically clears that month's settled mark, returns any prepaid balance that was deducted, and shows a banner prompting you to settle again so the numbers stay correct.
What are fixed costs?
Registered entries for recurring costs such as rent, utilities, and subscriptions. Each one holds a category, a payer, a burden ratio, and the day of the month it is paid, plus one or more dated periods that carry the amount — so a rent increase is just a new period on the same fixed cost, and earlier months keep the old amount. Entries for the current month are created automatically when you open the app, and entries that already exist stay as they are even if you later edit or delete the fixed cost.
Can I customise the categories?
Yes. A new household starts with a set of everyday categories and subcategories, and you can add, rename, and reorder them in settings. Each category carries a colour (36 to choose from), an icon, and its default burden ratio; subcategories sit one level below, are optional on any expense, and do not affect the settlement. You can also create a category or subcategory on the spot from the expense entry form. A category or subcategory that expenses are already attached to cannot be deleted, but you can archive it so it stops appearing when you record something new.
Which currency does the app use?
Whoever creates the household picks the currency during setup (the initial suggestion follows the app's language). A household uses a single currency, the partner who joins with an invite code inherits it, and amounts are formatted according to your device's region settings.
How do the Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets work?
There are four widgets. Our Wallet shows this month's total and the current settlement estimate — in the large size it adds a category breakdown, the biggest categories, and a comparison with the same point last month — and it is also available on the Lock Screen. Settlement estimate puts who-pays-whom front and centre. Compare with last month shows the difference against the same point a month ago. Quick entry shows categories you choose (up to four in the small size, eight in the medium one): tap one and the entry screen opens with that category already selected, so all that is left to type is the amount. It can also show a Receipt tile that opens the camera for receipt scanning. To choose those categories, touch and hold the widget and pick Edit Widget.
What notifications does the app send?
On the first day of each month you are both reminded to settle the previous month, with a single follow-up five days later if it is still open. You are also notified when your partner marks a month as settled, records an expense or a prepayment, or joins your household. Each group can be switched on or off in settings, and expenses generated automatically from fixed costs are never notified. The app asks for notification permission once your household is set up; declining changes nothing else.
Can I set a profile photo?
Yes, but it is entirely optional. In Settings → Profile you can pick a photo from your library, crop it, and it will be shown as a small circle next to your display name inside the app. Leaving it unset changes nothing — no placeholder image is shown. The photo is stored at an unguessable address, is not used in notifications, and is deleted along with your account.
Why do I see an ad, and what is the "Allow Tracking" prompt?
Our Wallet is free and is supported by Google AdMob banners in a few places — within the expense list, on the settlement, insights, settings, category and fixed-cost screens, and on some of the entry forms — plus an occasional full-screen ad when you come back to the app after being away for a while. The "Allow Tracking" prompt is Apple's App Tracking Transparency. Choosing Ask App Not to Track means non-personalized ads are shown instead — nothing else changes. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Is my financial data sent anywhere for analytics?
No. The app uses Google Analytics for Firebase only for anonymous usage events (for example, "an expense was added"). Amounts, notes, category names, and anything else you type are never sent to analytics. Receipt scanning is also done on your device — the image and the text read from it are never uploaded (see the receipt question above). Your household data is stored in our database solely to sync it between you and your partner. Push notifications are the one place amounts and category names do appear, because they are written for the two of you — see our Privacy Policy for details.
How do I leave a household or delete my account?
Both options are in the app's settings screen. Leaving a household keeps your account; deleting your account removes the personal data linked to you. If your partner remains in the household, the shared records are kept so their history stays intact, with your entries attributed to your display name only.
The app is asking me to update. Do I have to?
Usually not. When a newer version is recommended, the app shows a dialog you can dismiss with Later, plus a link on the settings screen, and you can keep using the version you have. Occasionally — for example after a change that older versions can no longer work with — a version becomes required, and the app asks you to update before continuing. Installing the latest version from the App Store resolves both cases.
My partner's changes are not showing up.
The app refreshes when you pull down on the list, when you return to it after switching away, and whenever a notification about your partner's activity arrives. If the data still looks stale, check your network connection and try again; if the problem persists, email us at support@kozuke.dev.
Which devices and languages are supported?
Our Wallet is an iPhone app (portrait orientation). It is available in English, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional). It follows your device language by default, and you can pick a different one in Settings → App → Display language; the choice is tied to your account. See the App Store listing for the minimum iOS version.
